The Ultimate Guide to Men’s Swimwear

by Wednesday, March 16, 2022

Next time you reach in your drawer and grab the old Hawaiian board shorts, stop. Even though men have fewer styles to choose from than women, we can still find the best suit for our shape. So if you’ve been hitting the gym and you’re ready to show off your swimsuit body, read on and we’ll show you how to pick the right swimwear.

Here’s a guide to looking your best in a swimsuit:

1. Trunks

Swim trunks look the most similar to regular shorts. They’re usually made from light, fast-drying materials (nylon or polyester) and feature a tighter-fitting lining inside. Trunks are generally shorter, and should stop a couple inches above the knee. Don’t be afraid to show some thigh and definitely don’t wear them baggy.

2. Swim briefs

We often refer to these as speedos, tight, body-hugging swimsuits with a V-shaped front that certainly bares the thighs. Swim briefs are not for the shy guy. These form-fitting briefs are worn by performance swimmers, and are also big in the European culture. If you’re looking for an even tan, dare to bare.

3. Square-Cut Shorts

Another body-hugging style that covers from the waist to the upper thigh.

4. Jammers

Jammers resemble bike shorts without the padded crotch and seat. They are knee-length, skintight suits used by competitive swimmers.

5. Wetsuits and Drysuits

They are close-fitting suits designed for prolonged immersion, usually in the context of snorkeling, scuba diving, or board sports.

What’s your body type?

Before you choose which swimsuit you like the best, make sure you have the right fit for your build:

Tall guys:

Try swim shorts that hit right above the knee. This will give your body some proportion and keep your legs from looking too long.

Short guys:

A pair that hits around the mid-thigh area will look great on you. This will give you the illusion of added height by making your legs look longer.

Big guys:

Choose something solid on the darker side of the color spectrum. This will streamline your silhouette.

Slim guys:

To look a bit bigger, a bold print or color will add some heft to your frame.

If you’re planning out your summer wardrobe, follow these guidelines to look strong and confident in the water.
