We take pride in our appearance and invest a good amount of time, money and effort into how we look. For client-facing professionals in particular, looking smart, sharp and put together is a necessity.

The key to looking your best means grooming properly. It’s no secret beards are in. The lumber sexual epidemic took over, and we followed with our most impressive beards. You can keep your beard, just remember not to let it go. Follow these 5 basic grooming tips for men to stay on top of your appearance:

5 Basic Grooming Rules For Men

#1 Trim Weekly

Before you had a mustache and/or beard, you most likely shaved everyday. It’s important to remember that your hair is still growing, so it needs a good trim at least once every week. Purchase a beard trimmer and go over everything lightly and evenly. It’s a short, simple process that keeps you from looking like Abraham Lincoln. Don’t forget to trim your mustache as well.

#2 Eliminate Ear and Nose Hair

I can’t name one girl (or guy for that matter) that finds nose and ear hair sexy. If you’re a tall man, especially, most people look up at you. You don’t want the first thing they see to be long hairs coming out of your nostrils. Purchase a good nose hair trimmer to get the job done effectively.

Same goes for your ears. As you age, unfortunately your ears grow more hair. Use a mirror to examine your ears and trim pretty much wherever you see hair growing. You can use your nose trimmer to do this as well.

#3 Don’t Neglect Your Neck

Men tend to forget about this area because they can’t see it or rely on barbers to shape it up. But, a neat neck is a neat man. This hair grows fast, and unless you get weekly trims, you need to clean up your neck hairs once or twice a week. It’s simple to do – use a regular razor or hair trimmers and work your way from the bottom of your hairline down to the collar.

#4 Banish Unibrows

Wax, thread, tweeze, do whatever you have to do, but don’t be caught with a unibrow. If you do wax, make sure to find someone who specializes in male grooming to do the job.

#5 Be Aware of Dandruff

Itchy, flaky scalps are not our friends. And especially in winter, we’re prone to dry skin. Fortunately, there’s tips and tricks to prevent dandruff. Use a men’s dandruff shampoo with salicylic acid and other skin soothing ingredients. Make sure to wash your hair regularly (but don’t overwash) and consume good fats (think avocados and salmon). Also, avoid excess hair products as much as possible.
