I‘ve written about different types of suits and formal wear more than a few times now. But I’ve never really gotten into the nitty gritty. And by that, I mean how to actually tie a bow tie like you were born to do it.
Contrary to popular belief, there’s really not much into the process of tying a bow tie. In fact, you can even do it in just a few seconds. What actually takes time is choosing the right cloth, the right color, and the right size of bow tie to complete your look. But that’s an entirely different topic altogether.
So without further ado, here are the 6 steps you need to follow to tie a bow tie like the boss you truly are.
Tie A Bow Tie Like A Boss | How Men Dress Formal
Get that regal and suave look only a bow tie can bring to your look by mastering all these 6 steps. Also, just in time for bow tie day, enjoy these tips on how to tie a bow tie like a boss. It won’t take much, just a few seconds of your time.
Step 1: Prepare your chosen bow tie
Place your bow tie around your neck. Make sure the right end is around an inch and a half longer than the left end.
Step 2: Do the crossover
Cross the longer end over the shorter end, and pull the crossed over longer end right through the loop.
You can then set aside the longer end, and focus on the shorter.
Step 3: Form the front loop
Take your shorter end, and fold it to place across your collar to make a bow tie shape. Hold it in place with your forefinger.
Step 4: Create the back loop
Now bring your longer end down over the front of the folded shorter end. Then pinch both sides of the bow shapes together, across the center.
This is where the back loop is created just in front of your collar button.
Step 5: Go through the loop
Take the top of the longer end and thread it through the loop right in front of your collar button. Pull the folded end through the other side of the loop until the ends form a triangle.
Step 6: Tighten
Pull on both folded ends of the bow tie at once to tighten, and ensure the shape is to your liking.
